Now that our oldest son Tom has returned to university, it is my task at night to walk our beautiful dog Daisy before we all lay down our heads.

While the journey is usually pleasurable, there are always hidden dangers lurking around the corner.

This preamble is by way of saying that Farley and Grover are thinly disguised stand-ins and I sometimes have disturbing premonitions.

Farley and Grover learned to love ritual.
Their strolls of an eve turned habitual.
Man and dog side by side,
they’d glide with firm stride,
an experience dearly to wish you all.

From shadow to streetlamps’ white glimmer,
day’s cares would recede ever dimmer.
They’d bask in the night,
suburban traffic grew light,
mind and body kept fitter and trimmer.

Farley, by wife, would be admonished,
“No hearing aid or umbrella, you’ll be astonished.”
Fair weather or showers,
tunneling through leafy bowers,
Grover’s business was eventually accomplished.

When he stooped down to scoop,
Farley’s eyes went off route.
F-series truck jumped the curb,
Shriek and loud yelp were heard
and twined ball was launched alley-oop.

What had once been so copacetic
now took 911 call and a medic.
The streets lost dear friends,
sad how love sometimes ends,
mournful and less than aesthetic.

And now, for a more serious purpose (sort of), we switch into prose poetry in Kiss Me Soft, Kill Me Quick. A femme fatale enters a bar and “noir” things happen.

Lovely but sad poem, Alex. I say to keep Daisy on a tight leash!

That’s always a fear in the back of my head walking the dog or walking while my 5 year old rides her bike.
